The celebration service with light refreshments will begin at 11:30 am, followed by a picnic featuring delicious food for both carnivores and vegetarians. Volunteers will be posted near the Ponce and Barnett street/alley entrances to the Open Door to assist with parking locations and guests who have mobility concerns. We expect a large crowd, so come early to find parking and enjoy hospitality in our house and yard.

Our beloved brother and fellow activist Mike Vosburg-Casey died July 31 of colon cancer. Mike lived with us at the Open Door from 2001 to 2003 and was one of the peace and justice movement’s most dedicated and active members for his entire adult life. In 2006, Mike crossed the line at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, formerly the School of the Americas, at the Army’s Fort Benning, Georgia, during the annual protest there, for which he served 100 days in prison. Until his last days, he remained fiercely outspoken against violence, war, the death penalty and the abuses of the prison-industrial complex.

Our prayers are with Mike’s family, including his wife, Amy; his daughter, Elena; his brother, Dan; his sister, Beth; and his parents, Tom and Betty Casey.

Mike’s life remains an inspiration to action for all who love justice, peace, and the radical vision of the Beloved Community. Please join us on Saturday, October 5, to celebrate his life and renew our commitment to work for justice.
